“Politics That Ignore Young First-Time Voters Will Lose the Future”

The first vote cast by 18- and 19-year-olds is not just another participation in an election.

It is a powerful signal about where the future of a city is headed.

Donghae is no exception.

A city that loses its young people loses its future. Only a city where young people choose to return and stay can achieve sustainable growth and vitality.

Today, Donghae’s greatest crisis is not simply population decline.

The deeper problem is that many young people no longer feel hope in their own hometown. That sense of hopelessness is what truly weakens a city.

For years, local politics has repeated the same pattern — massive development projects, construction-centered promises, and flashy slogans.

But young people are asking different questions:

“Can I actually build my life in this city?”

“Can I pursue my dreams here?”

“Can I prepare for my future without leaving?”

Politics that cannot answer these questions is already behind the times.

In that sense, candidate Kim Gi-ha’s youth-focused pledges for first-time voters deserve attention. Policies such as support for driver’s license fees, certification exams, job preparation expenses, and interview transportation costs may sound small to some politicians, but to young people, they are real and immediate.

Young voters no longer want empty rhetoric.

They want practical changes that improve everyday life:

lower transportation costs, better places to study, more cultural opportunities, and real pathways to jobs and internships.

That is what “future” truly means to today’s generation.

In particular, the proposed Youth Participatory Budget System could become more than just another campaign promise. It has the potential to change the structure of local politics itself. Young people should no longer be treated merely as tools for election campaigns or social media images. They must become active participants in policymaking and budgeting.

The attitude of politicians matters most.

The moment politics begins treating youth as nothing more than symbolic decorations, that city begins to age and decline. Cities that respect and empower young people survive. Cities that ignore them eventually fade away.

The votes of first-time young voters in this election are not insignificant.

Each ballot represents a declaration about what kind of city Donghae will become.

Will it remain a city young people are forced to leave?

Or will it become a city they choose to return to?

That is the question politics must answer now.
