“교실을 넘어 세계로”… 철원에서 시작된 한·호 청소년 우정의 8일

A Small Friendship Beginning in an Unfamiliar Classroom

봄기운이 막 피어오른 4월의 철원, 낯선 언어와 다른 교복을 입은 학생들이 신철원중학교 교문을 들어섰다. 철원교육지원청이 호주 퀸즐랜드주 버펜가리 하이스쿨 학생들을 초청해 ‘학교 방문의 날’을 운영한 것이다.

In April, when spring had just begun to bloom in Cheorwon, students wearing unfamiliar uniforms and speaking a different language stepped into Sincheorwon Middle School. The Cheorwon Office of Education hosted a “School Visit Day,” inviting students from Burpengary High School in Queensland, Australia.

이번 만남은 단순한 방문이 아닌, 철원군과 호주 간 교육 교류 협력(MOU)의 결실이었다. 짧은 일정 속에서도 학생들은 서로의 일상 속으로 깊이 들어가는 특별한 시간을 맞이했다.

This encounter was more than just a visit—it was a meaningful outcome of an educational exchange agreement (MOU) between Cheorwon County and Australia. Even within a short schedule, the students were given a rare opportunity to step into each other’s daily lives.

호주에서 온 아홉 명의 학생들은 한국 가정에서의 홈스테이를 시작으로 학교 수업, 지역 문화 체험, 그리고 서울 탐방까지 이어지는 8일간의 여정을 함께했다. 그들의 하루는 관광이 아닌 ‘생활’이었다.

The nine students from Australia began their eight-day journey with homestays in Korean households, followed by school classes, local cultural experiences, and visits to Seoul. Their days were not about sightseeing, but about truly living the experience.

신철원중학교 교실 안에서 그들은 더 이상 ‘외국인’이 아니었다. 한국 학생들과 1:1 버디로 연결되어 함께 수업을 듣고, 체육과 예술 활동에 참여하며 자연스럽게 친구가 되어갔다.

Inside the classrooms of Sincheorwon Middle School, they were no longer “foreigners.” Paired one-on-one with Korean buddies, they attended classes together, joined sports and arts activities, and naturally became friends.

특히 요리교실에서 함께 만든 한국 음식은 언어를 넘어선 소통의 순간이었다. 서툰 손놀림 속에서도 웃음이 이어졌고, 서로의 문화를 이해하는 가장 따뜻한 방식이 되었다.

In particular, the cooking class—where they prepared Korean dishes together—became a moment of communication beyond language. Despite their clumsy hands, laughter filled the room, creating one of the warmest ways to understand each other’s cultures.

한 호주 학생은 “한국 친구들과 함께 수업을 듣고 활동하면서 서로를 더 깊이 이해할 수 있었다”며 짧지만 강렬했던 경험을 전했다. 그 말 속에는 ‘다름’이 아닌 ‘공감’이 담겨 있었다.

One Australian student shared, “By attending classes and doing activities with Korean friends, I was able to understand them more deeply.” Though brief, the experience was powerful—filled not with differences, but with empathy.

#최일호 교육장은 이번 교류가 학생들에게 세상을 넓히는 계기가 되길 바란다고 말했다. 교실이라는 작은 공간에서 시작된 만남이, 더 넓은 세계로 이어지는 첫걸음이 되기를 기대했다.

Superintendent Choi Il-ho expressed his hope that this exchange would broaden students’ perspectives. He believes that a meeting that began in a small classroom could become the first step toward a much wider world.

서로 다른 나라에서 온 학생들이 함께 웃고 배우는 시간. 그 짧은 순간이 남긴 것은 성적표가 아닌, 오래 기억될 우정이었다.

Students from different countries laughed and learned together. What remained from those brief moments was not a report card, but a friendship that would be remembered for a long time.
