[칼럼] '안미경중'의 허상을 걷어내야 한다

이재명 대통령이 워싱턴 전략국제문제연구소(CSIS) 연설에서 “안미경중의 시대는 끝났다”고 선언하였다. 다소 늦은 감이 있으나, 방향은 분명히 옳다. 대한민국 외교는 오랫동안 안보는 미국에, 경제는 중국에 의존하는 이분법적 구도를 유지해 왔다. 그러나 미·중 간 전략 경쟁이 전면화된 오늘날, 안미경중은 더 이상 유효할 수 없는 허상에 불과하다.

President Lee Jae-myung declared in his speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington that “the era of Anmi-Gyeongjung is over.” Though somewhat belated, the direction is clearly correct. For decades, Korea’s diplomacy maintained a binary structure—depending on the U.S. for security and China for the economy. Yet in today’s reality of full-scale U.S.-China strategic rivalry, Anmi-Gyeongjung can no longer remain valid; it is nothing but an illusion.

국가의 생존과 국민의 안녕은 모호한 균형외교가 아니라 확고한 동맹 노선 위에서만 보장될 수 있다. 안보와 경제를 분리하여 사고하는 순간, 대한민국은 전략적 입지를 잃고 국민의 삶은 불확실성 속으로 내던져진다. 대통령의 이번 발언은 최소한 ‘동맹의 우선순위’를 명확히 하겠다는 신호로 받아들일 수 있다.
The survival of the nation and the well-being of its people can only be secured on the foundation of a firm alliance, not vague balancing diplomacy. The moment security and economy are separated in policy thinking, Korea risks losing its strategic standing, and its citizens are cast into uncertainty. The President’s remarks can therefore be interpreted as a signal to clarify the priority of alliances.

대한민국의 번영은 자유, 민주주의, 법치라는 가치를 공유하는 미국과의 굳건한 동맹 속에서만 가능하다. 중국과의 관계는 필요하다면 국익의 차원에서 관리할 수 있다. 그러나 그것이 미국과의 신뢰를 저울질하거나 훼손하는 방식이어서는 결코 안 된다.
Korea’s prosperity can only be realized within the strong alliance with the U.S., a partner sharing the values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. Relations with China may be managed pragmatically in the dimension of national interest, but they must never be pursued in a manner that undermines or weighs against trust with the U.S.

지금 한국이 나아가야 할 길은 ‘글로벌 스탠다드 동맹국’으로서 책임 있는 자세를 견지하는 것이다. 한·미 동맹의 심화를 통해 안보를 공고히 하고, 나아가 한·미·일 협력의 외연을 확장하는 것이야말로 불확실한 국제질서 속에서 대한민국이 선택해야 할 유일한 길이다.
The path Korea must take now is to uphold the responsible posture of a “global standard ally.” By deepening the Korea-U.S. alliance to strengthen security and expanding the framework of Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation, Korea will embrace the only viable course available in today’s uncertain international order.

대통령의 발언이 일회성 정치적 수사에 그쳐서는 안 된다. 안미경중이라는 낡은 틀을 과감히 폐기하고, 국민에게 확고한 동맹의 미래를 제시할 때, 비로소 대한민국은 흔들림 없는 국가 전략을 갖추게 될 것이다.
The President’s statement must not remain a one-time political gesture. Only by decisively discarding the outdated framework of Anmi-Gyeongjung and presenting the people with a clear future rooted in steadfast alliances will Korea truly secure a national strategy that does not waver.
