In the 1960s, Korea was a desperate country.

In the aftermath of hunger and war, the Korean government sought a breakthrough — one solution was sending miners and nurses to Germany.

In 1963, President Park Chung-hee visited Germany and said:

“Our people are healthy, diligent, and responsible. Please give our youth the opportunity to work.”

Moved by this plea, the German government approved a development loan worth 150 million Deutsche Marks — backed by the labor of Korean miners and nurses.

Dogye — Where the Journey Began

Dogye Mine in Samcheok was the final training ground and symbolic departure point for Korean miners heading to Germany.

Here, they learned how to mine coal and studied German — preparing for life in a foreign land.

For them, Dogye was both a farewell platform and the threshold to a new life.

First Lady Yuk Young-soo descended into the mines, holding coal-blackened hands with heartfelt compassion.

President Park said, “Every penny of foreign currency you earn will help build our nation.”

Those words were not rhetoric.

Their hard-earned remittances became the seed money that fueled the “Miracle on the Han River” and laid the foundations of Korea’s industrial economy.

In 2025, Governor Kim Jin-tae Meets Them Again

Now, over 60 years later, Governor Kim Jin-tae visited Essen and Bochum to meet former Korean miners and nurses living in Germany.

He said:

“Without your sweat and tears, there would be no Korea today. We will never forget your sacrifice.”

Dogye Mine — Toward UNESCO Memory of the World

Governor Kim expressed his intent to register Dogye Mine as a UNESCO Memory of the World site.

He vowed not to let Dogye be forgotten as a mere closed mine, but remembered as a living testament to Korea’s industrial rise and national rebuilding.

A Nation That Remembers Its Past Builds Its Future

Korea must remember the miners and nurses who endured hardship in a foreign land.

Dogye was not just a coal mine — it was the starting point of Korean modernization.

Today’s Gangwon — Designing the Future

Today, Gangwon Province is emerging as a hub of sustainable industries — hydrogen, bio, tourism, and more.

This visit was not just diplomacy — it was a warm, thoughtful politics rooted in historical memory and aimed at shaping the future.

Glück Auf -A Greeting of Survival

(Glück Auf)”.

“Glück Auf” - a greeting among German miners.

It means “good luck,” but for miners, it was a heartfelt wish for safe return from deep underground.

Now, those words echo again-in Dogye, Samcheok.

May their sweat and sacrifice be forever remembered and passed down through generations.
