조국혁신당의 성비위 사건은 단순한 정당 내부 문제를 넘어 한국 정치 전반의 구조적 문제를 보여주었다. 피해자들의 목소리는 오랫동안 외면되었고, 문제 제기자들은 2차 가해와 조직 내 고립을 감수해야 했다. 이러한 과정에서 조국 전 대표는 사건을 알고도 침묵하며 어떠한 실질적 조치도 취하지 않았다. 최소한의 성인지 감수성조차 결여된 지도부의 모습은 국민이 요구하는 정치적 책임과는 큰 괴리를 보였다.

The sexual misconduct scandal in the Cho Kuk Innovation Party exposes structural issues in Korean politics beyond a single party. Victims’ voices were ignored for months, while whistleblowers faced secondary harm and isolation. In this process, former party leader Cho Kuk remained silent despite being aware of the incident, taking no substantive action. The leadership’s apparent lack of basic gender sensitivity starkly contrasts with the level of accountability citizens expect from political leaders.

더욱 충격적인 것은 최강욱 민주당 교육연수원장의 발언이다. 그는 문제 제기를 “사소한 일”로 치부하고, 문제를 제기한 사람들을 모욕적 표현으로 낙인찍었다. 이는 정치인이 사회적 공인을 대표하는 위치에서 보여야 할 최소한의 품위와 책임을 저버린 사례다. 문제를 바로잡으려는 목소리를 ‘개·돼지’에 비유한 그의 발언은, 피해자와 사회적 연대를 향한 모욕이자, 정치권 내 카르텔적 관행을 재확인시키는 행위였다.

Even more shocking were remarks by Choi Kang-wook, head of the Democratic Party Training Institute. He dismissed the concerns as “trivial” and derogatorily labeled those raising the issues. Such language betrays the basic dignity and responsibility expected of public officials. By equating whistleblowers to “dogs and pigs,” his remarks insulted victims and social solidarity while reaffirming cartel-like practices within politics.

조국 전 대표와 최강욱 원장은 이번 광복절 특별사면으로 복권되었다. 그러나 이 결정은 국민적 신뢰 회복이 아니라 정치권 전반에 대한 불신과 비판으로 이어지고 있다. 사면과 복권이 국민 통합을 위한 것이었다면, 두 인사의 침묵과 부적절한 발언은 그 취지를 훼손했다. 정치적 특권이 국민의 상식과 정의보다 우선시될 수 없음을 분명히 보여준 사례다.

Both Cho Kuk and Choi were reinstated through the recent Liberation Day special pardon. Yet, this decision has fueled distrust and criticism rather than restoring public confidence. If amnesty and reinstatement are intended to promote national unity, their silence and inappropriate remarks undermine that purpose. This case clearly demonstrates that political privilege cannot override public sense of justice and fairness.

정치의 본령은 책임과 성찰에 있다. 이번 사건에서 드러난 것은 침묵과 방어, 그리고 피해자 경시였다. 국민은 정치인에게 더 높은 도덕적 기준과 공적 책임을 요구하고 있으며, 이를 외면하는 정치인은 신뢰를 상실하게 된다. 정계 은퇴는 개인의 선택이지만, 신뢰를 잃은 정치인이 다시 공적 영역에서 영향력을 행사할 자격은 없다.

The essence of politics lies in accountability and reflection. This incident revealed silence, defensiveness, and disregard for victims. Citizens demand higher moral standards and public accountability from politicians; those who neglect these standards lose public trust. Retirement from politics is a personal choice, yet leaders who have lost trust are not qualified to wield influence in the public sphere.

이번 사건은 정치가 무엇보다 책임의 영역이라는 점을 국민에게 일깨우는 준엄한 경고다. 조국 전 대표와 최강욱 원장은 침묵과 무책임으로 남긴 상처를 직시하고, 자연인으로 돌아가 반성하는 삶을 살아야 한다. 정치인에게 주어진 권력은 개인의 방패가 될 수 없으며, 국민 앞에서 성찰과 책임으로 증명될 때만 그 정당성을 인정받을 수 있다.

This scandal serves as a solemn reminder to the public that politics is, above all, an arena of responsibility. Former Cho Kuk and Choi Kang-wook must confront the harm caused by their silence and irresponsibility, and return to private life to live reflectively. The power entrusted to politicians cannot serve as a personal shield; its legitimacy is recognized only when demonstrated through accountability and reflection before the people.
