[사설] 교육의 수장, 신뢰 회복이 최우선이다

[기자의생각] 최교진 교육부장관 후보자,그의 생각을 엿볼수있는 언행을 들으며 안타까운 마음이 든다. 교육은 백년대계다. 그러나 최근 교육부 장관 후보자를 둘러싼 논란은 그 무게를 되묻게 한다. Education is a long-term endeavor spanning a hundred years. However, recent controversies surrounding the nominee for Minister of Education compel us to reconsider the weight of this responsibility.

음주운전 전력, 논문 표절 의혹, 과거 SNS 발언 논란 등 후보자의 과거 행적이 연이어 드러나면서, 대통령실의 인사 검증이 제대로 작동했는지 의문을 제기하지 않을 수 없다.
Past records of drunk driving, allegations of plagiarism in academic work, and controversial past social media posts have come to light, raising questions about whether the presidential office’s vetting process functioned adequately.

물론 완벽한 사람은 없다. 하지만 교육의 수장은 다르다. 그의 말과 행동은 학교 현장과 학부모의 신뢰에 직결되며, 아이들의 미래에 직접적인 영향을 미친다.
Of course, no one is perfect. But the head of education is different. Their words and actions directly affect trust within schools and among parents, and they have a direct impact on the future of children.

공교육이 이미 신뢰 위기에 놓인 상황에서, 장관 개인의 과거가 불필요한 논란을 낳는다면, 이는 결코 가볍게 넘길 문제가 아니다.
With public education already facing a trust crisis, the personal past of the minister causing unnecessary controversy cannot be taken lightly.

학부모와 교사들이 바라는 것은 정치적 색채나 과거 이력보다, 공교육을 책임질 수 있는 도덕적 무게와 전문성을 갖춘 리더다. 교육은 단기 성과로 평가할 수 없으며, 지금 내리는 선택이 수십 년 뒤 아이들의 삶과 사회의 품격을 좌우한다.
Parents and teachers seek a leader with moral integrity and professional competence to oversee public education, rather than political affiliations or past records. Education cannot be evaluated by short-term achievements; the choices made today will shape children’s lives and society for decades to come.

따라서 인사 검증의 기준은 ‘이 정도면 괜찮다’라는 안일함이 될 수 없다. 교육부 장관 자리만큼은 정치적 이해득실보다 사회적 신뢰를 최우선으로 삼아야 한다. 만약 후보자가 그 기준에 미치지 못한다면, 다른 인물을 찾는 것이 옳다.
Therefore, the standard for vetting cannot be complacency with “this is acceptable.” The position of Minister of Education must prioritize social trust over political considerations. If the nominee does not meet this standard, seeking another candidate is the right course.

교육은 타협의 대상이 아니며, 아이들의 미래를 지키는 일은 어떠한 계산보다 우선해야 한다.
Education is not a matter for compromise; protecting children’s future must take precedence over any calculation.

교육은 백년대계다. 그 출발점은 교육의 수장을 누구로 세우느냐에 달려 있다. 사회적 신뢰와 책임감을 갖춘 리더만이 그 길을 제대로 열 수 있다.
Education is a long-term endeavor. Its starting point depends on whom we appoint as the head. Only a leader with social trust and a sense of responsibility can properly pave the way.
