Wonju Lacquer Takes the Diplomatic Stage
The Beauty of Slowness in a Fast World
In a corner of Gangnam District, gently touched by spring light,
the quiet story of Wonju unfolded.
Amid the vibrant stage of medical tourism, the deep luster of lacquerware—crafted by time and hands—began to speak to the world.

On a day when ambassadors’ spouses from 16 countries gathered,
their gaze lingered beyond cutting-edge technology—on the beauty of slowness.
Not a fleeting shine, but a glow layered with time.
That was the lacquerware of Wonju.
Art born at the fingertips does not ask for borders.
The profound breath of master lacquer artisan Yang Yujeon,
the delicate patterns of mother-of-pearl master Park Gwirae,
and the everyday craft of artist Lee Misook—
together, they carried the very essence of Korean time.

Even in the eyes of distant lands,
lacquerware did not feel unfamiliar.
For vessels that hold light and human warmth
reach the heart before language does.
Once again, Wonju connected with the world.
Beyond the memories of its exhibition at COEX,
it now speaks on a broader stage—
quietly, yet profoundly, sharing the beauty of Korea.
And the journey is far from over.
Like the glow of lacquer—slow, yet enduring—
the story of Wonju will continue to spread across the world.
