In the early hours of Friday, the Middle East was jolted awake by the roar of jets and the echo of distant explosions. Israel had launched a sweeping pre-emptive air campaign, striking deep into Iranian territory. The operation, dubbed “Rising Lion”, targeted over 100 locations, including the fortified nuclear facilities at Natanz and Fordow, missile production plants, and the homes of senior Revolutionary Guard commanders.

Just hours after the Israeli sorties returned to base, Iran launched “Operation True Promise III”— a coordinated retaliation involving over 100 drones and 150 ballistic missiles. Though many were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome system and even by Jordanian and U.S. allied forces, several missiles evaded defenses and struck Tel Aviv and other urban centers. At least one person was confirmed dead and more than 60 were injured in the barrage.

The international community is now on edge. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced it would seek immediate access to the damaged Iranian nuclear facilities to assess radiation risks, though early reports suggest no critical leaks have occurred. Meanwhile, U.S. officials reaffirmed their commitment to Israel’s security while urging both sides to avoid further escalation. The United Kingdom, European Union, and Japan issued similar calls for restraint.

But diplomacy may be running out of road. Iran has vowed “harsh punishment” and hinted that it may activate regional proxy groups — Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthi forces in Yemen, and Shia militias in Iraq-to widen the theater of confrontation. Israel, for its part, is on full alert and reportedly coordinating regional defense responses with allies.

Beneath the sound and fury lies a deeper fear: Iran is believed to have enough 60% enriched uranium for several nuclear bombs, and some analysts believe it may be just weeks away from reaching weapons-grade levels. The IAEA’s last full access report warned of “unprecedented opacity” in Tehran’s program.

As the region watches with held breath, one fact is undeniable-a shadow war years in the making has erupted into open confrontation. The world now faces the most dangerous flashpoint between Israel and Iran in decades, with the next 72 hours potentially determining whether the conflict remains contained or spirals into something far more devastating.

더 깊은 우려는 따로 있다. 이란은 60% 농축 우라늄을 핵폭탄 수 기 제작에 충분한 수준으로 축적해온 것으로 알려졌고, 무기급(90%) 도달까지는 몇 주밖에 남지 않았다는 분석도 나온다. 국제원자력기구는 최근 보고서에서 이란 핵 프로그램의 투명성 부족을 “전례 없는 수준”이라고 경고했다.

긴박하게 돌아가는 중동의 시계 속에서 세계는 숨죽이고 있다. 수년간 물밑에서 이어져온 이스라엘과 이란의 그림자 전쟁이 마침내 표면으로 터져 나온 것이다. 향후 72시간이 이 충돌이 국지전에 머무를지, 아니면 전면전으로 번질지를 가를 중대한 분수령이 될 것이다.
