Samcheok City Cancels ‘2025 Samcheok Beach Countdown Event,’ Drastically Scales Down New Year Sunrise Celebrations

Samcheok City announced on the morning of the 30th that it has decided to cancel the "2025 Samcheok Beach Countdown Event," which was being prepared to celebrate the end of 2024. Additionally, the New Year sunrise celebrations, planned to be held at several landmarks in the city, will be significantly scaled down.

This decision follows the recent tragic incident at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province, which led the central government to declare a special disaster area and designate a national mourning period until January 4.

Samcheok City has decided to cancel or drastically reduce its year-end and New Year events to join the nation in mourning for the victims.

The event originally planned to celebrate the opening of the Donghae Line on January 1 will also be significantly scaled down. Festivities such as celebratory performances and commemorative photo sessions will be omitted, with the event limited to distributing small souvenirs.

The scaled-down sunrise celebrations will exclude various performances and fireworks displays, focusing solely on ceremonial traditions, such as serving rice cake soup, which has been an annual feature, in a subdued manner.

Safety management measures will be greatly strengthened. Anticipating crowds of tourists and residents gathering to watch the sunrise even without formal events, the city plans to enhance facility inspections and reinforce safety personnel. Cooperation with relevant agencies will also be intensified to prevent any accidents.

A city official stated, “We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families affected by the tragedy at Muan International Airport,” and added, “Samcheok City has decided to cancel and scale down events in solidarity with the national mourning atmosphere. We kindly ask for the cooperation of local residents.”

삼척시가 2024년의 마지막을 기념하기 위해 준비하고 있었던 ‘2025 삼척해변 카운트다운’ 행사를 전격 취소하고, 관내 여러 명소에서 진행할 계획이었던 해맞이 행사 역시 대폭 축소한다고 30일 오전 밝혔다.

이는 최근 발생한 전라남도 무안국제공항의 참사로 인해 중앙정부가 특별재난지역을 선포하고 오는 1월 4일까지 국가애도기간을 지정한 것에 따른 것으로, 삼척시는 연말·연시 행사를 전격 취소하거나 대폭 축소해 희생자들에 대한 애도의 분위기에 동참하기로 했다.

아울러 오는 1월 1일 동해선 개통을 맞아 진행하기로 했던 탑승객 환영 이벤트도 대폭 축소해 소규모로 진행할 예정으로, 축하공연과 기념촬영 등 행사를 자제하고 소규모 기념품을 배부하는 것으로 대체하기로 했다.

대폭 축소되는 해맞이 행사에는 각종 공연, 불꽃놀이 등은 진행하지 않고 새해를 맞아 매년 제공해 왔던 떡국 시식 등 의례적인 절차만을 조용하게 진행할 계획이다.

안전관리를 위한 대책은 대폭 강화하여 시행한다. 별도의 행사가 없어도 일출을 보려는 관광객과 시민들이 몰릴 상황을 대비해 시설물 점검을 강화하고 안전관리 인력을 보강할 계획이며, 유관기관과의 협력체계를 더욱 강화해 불의의 사고가 발생하지 않도록 만만의 대비를 갖추고 있다.

삼척시 관계자는 “무안국제공항의 사고로 인해 슬픔이 크실 유가족분들에게 위로의 말씀을 전한다.”라며 “삼척시도 애도의 분위기에 동참하는 차원에서 행사 취소 및 축소를 결정하였으니 지역주민들의 많은 협조를 부탁드린다.”라고 말했다.
