In light of growing international concerns about illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, including North Korea’s potential deployment of troops, the MIKTA leaders called on all UN member states to support UN resolutions, including the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions.
MIKTA, an informal group of middle-power countries, comprises Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia, with the acronym derived from the first letter of each country's name.
The summit was attended by President Yoon, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, President of Mexico; Prabowo Subianto, President of Indonesia; Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Turkey; and Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia.
This meeting, organized by Mexico, the current chair of MIKTA, marks the third consecutive year that MIKTA leaders have met, following previous summits in 2022 and 2023.
The summit is seen as a reaffirmation of the MIKTA leaders’ commitment to strengthening solidarity among member countries and enhancing cooperation to address the various challenges facing the international community.
In the joint press statement, the MIKTA leaders reminded participants that MIKTA, established 11 years ago, is a regional partnership that shares a commitment to democracy, supports international law principles, and promotes multilateralism and international cooperation.
The leaders also urged all UN member states to support the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions during this period of global crises and geopolitical tensions. They reaffirmed their commitment to creating a world that is safe, peaceful, just, equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous for all people.
The summit underscored the importance of joint actions in core areas such as sustainable development and financing for development, food security, international peace and security, global health, scientific and technological innovation, digital cooperation, youth and future generations, and reforms of multilateral systems and global governance.
MIKTA leaders emphasized the group's role in seeking practical and creative solutions to regional and global challenges. As a group representing diverse cultures and regions, MIKTA is committed to bridging gaps and contributing to building consensus in major international discussions.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the G20, the premier forum for international economic cooperation, and expressed their support for the initiatives of MIKTA in major global dialogues.
They also noted that under the leadership of Mexico, the chair of MIKTA in 2024, MIKTA will host the 26th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting at the UN and the 4th Development Cooperation Network Meeting and 10th MIKTA Parliamentary Speakers’ Meeting in Mexico City.
MIKTA members have issued 18 joint statements at high-level multilateral meetings and adopted a special declaration supporting "Promises for the Future."
The MIKTA leaders expressed their gratitude for Mexico’s successful chairmanship and praised progress in the three focus areas set by Mexico: strengthening multilateralism, advancing development with a focus on women, and enhancing coordination among development cooperation agencies.
The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to furthering regional cooperation and strengthening MIKTA’s constructive role in addressing international issues during South Korea’s chairmanship of MIKTA in 2025.
