바다 곁에서 책을 읽고, 공연을 만나다

바다를 바라보며 책 한 권을 펼치는 시간. 파도 소리가 배경음악이 되고, 책장을 넘기는 손끝에는 바닷바람이 살며시 내려앉는다. 동해 망상해변에는 조금 특별한 작은도서관이 있다. 이름도 정겨운 ‘해뜰책뜰’이다.

Imagine opening a book while looking out over the sea. The sound of waves becomes your background music, while the ocean breeze gently brushes the pages. By Mangsang Beach in Donghae, there is a small but special library with a warm and inviting name — Haetteul Chaekteul.

여름의 끝자락부터 겨울의 문턱까지, 이곳에서는 책을 읽는 것에서 한 걸음 더 나아가 사람과 이야기를 만나고, 아이들과 공연을 즐기는 시간이 이어진다. 동해시는 오는 8월부터 12월까지 작가 초청 강연과 가족공연 등 다양한 문화 프로그램을 마련한다.

From the final days of summer to the beginning of winter, this seaside library becomes more than a place for reading. It becomes a place to meet writers, share stories, and enjoy performances with children. From August through December, Donghae City will offer a variety of cultural programs, including author talks and family performances.

Meeting Writers by the Sea

8월 29일부터 11월 8일까지 네 명의 작가가 차례로 해뜰책뜰을 찾는다. 홍인희·채지형·오세나·임화선 작가가 인문학과 여행, 그림책과 동화를 주제로 시민들과 이야기를 나눈다. 강연마다 30명의 참가자를 선착순으로 모집한다.

From August 29 to November 8, four writers — Hong In-hee, Chae Ji-hyung, Oh Se-na, and Lim Hwa-seon — will visit Haetteul Chaekteul. Through four special talks, they will meet local readers and share stories about the humanities, travel, picture books, and children's literature. Each session will welcome up to 30 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

책에서 읽던 이야기를 작가의 목소리로 직접 듣는 경험은 조금 다르다. 더구나 그 장소가 바다 곁이라면 어떨까. 여행을 이야기하다 잠시 창밖의 바다를 바라보고, 그림책 이야기를 나누다 파도 소리에 귀 기울이는 것. 그것만으로도 망상에서의 하루는 하나의 작은 여행 에세이가 될 수 있다.

There is something different about hearing a story directly from the person who wrote it. And when that conversation takes place beside the sea, it becomes even more memorable. Imagine talking about travel, then pausing to look at the ocean outside the window — or discussing a picture book while listening to the waves. A day like this in Mangsang can become a little travel essay of its own.

토요일 오후, 아이들의 웃음소리가 더해진다

Saturday Afternoons Filled with Children's Laughter

9월부터 12월까지는 매월 둘째 주 토요일 오후 2시, 해뜰책뜰이 작은 공연장으로 변신한다. 9월 마술쇼, 10월 테이블 인형극, 11월 샌드아트, 12월 탈 인형극이 차례로 무대에 오른다. 공연은 무료다.

From September through December, Haetteul Chaekteul will transform into a small performance venue at 2 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month. Families can enjoy a magic show in September, tabletop puppetry in October, sand art in November, and a mask puppet show in December. All performances are free.

지난해에도 인형극 등을 비롯한 7개 작품에 약 630명이 참여했다. 작은도서관이 단순히 책을 빌리는 곳을 넘어 아이와 부모가 함께 웃고 추억을 만드는 가족 문화공간으로 자리 잡고 있다는 의미일 것이다.

Last year, around 630 people attended seven performances and programs, including puppet shows. The numbers tell a simple story: this little library is becoming more than a place to borrow books. It is growing into a family cultural space where parents and children can laugh, experience, and make memories together.

고래화석박물관에서 바닷가 작은도서관으로

From a Whale Fossil Museum to a Seaside Library

해뜰책뜰의 이야기는 공간 자체에서도 흥미롭다. 옛 고래화석박물관을 활용해 2019년 문을 연 주민 복합문화공간으로, 작은도서관과 카페, 세미나실 등을 갖추고 있다.

The story of Haetteul Chaekteul is also the story of a space finding a new life. Opened in 2019 in the former Whale Fossil Museum, it has been transformed into a community cultural space featuring a small library, café, and seminar room.

과거의 공간을 허물어 없애는 대신 새로운 이야기를 입혔다. 이제 그곳에는 화석 대신 책이 있고, 전시장을 채우던 고요함 대신 아이들의 웃음과 책 읽는 소리, 사람들의 대화가 흐른다.

Instead of simply tearing down an old space, the community gave it a new story. Today, books have taken the place of fossils, while children's laughter, quiet reading, and warm conversations fill the rooms.

여행지의 도서관은 조금 달라도 좋다

A Library in a Travel Destination Can Be Different

특히 눈길을 끄는 것은 여행 관련 도서 200여 권을 갖춘 여행 특화 자료 코너다. 망상은 전국에서 여행자들이 찾아오는 동해안의 대표 관광지다. 그런 곳에서 여행에 관한 책을 읽는다는 것은 꽤 낭만적인 경험이다.

One particularly appealing feature is a special travel section containing around 200 travel-related books. Mangsang is one of Korea's well-known East Coast destinations, attracting visitors from across the country. Reading a book about travel while actually traveling by the sea has a certain romance of its own.

매월 마지막 토요일에는 ‘그림책 읽어주는 토요일’이 열리고, AI를 활용한 그림책 프로그램 등 새로운 독서 콘텐츠도 마련되고 있다. 도서관이 책을 보관하는 공간에서 경험을 만들어내는 공간으로 조금씩 변하고 있는 셈이다.

On the last Saturday of every month, the library also hosts “Picture Book Reading Saturday,” while new programs, including AI-assisted picture-book activities, are expanding the ways visitors can experience reading. In this sense, the library is gradually evolving from a place that stores books into a place that creates experiences.

A Journey of Sea, Books, and Culture

망상해변을 여행하는 방법은 꼭 바다에 들어가는 것만은 아니다.

바닷길을 걷다가 작은도서관에 들어가 책 한 권을 펼쳐도 좋다. 아이와 함께 인형극을 보고, 여행작가의 이야기에 귀를 기울여도 좋다. 카페에 앉아 잠시 쉬었다 다시 바다로 나가는 것도 여행이다.

There is more than one way to experience Mangsang Beach.

You can walk along the shore, step into a small library, and open a book. You can watch a puppet show with your children, listen to a travel writer's stories, or simply rest over a drink before returning to the sea. These quiet moments are part of travel, too.
