천년의 손끝에서 피어난 종이꽃, 동해 삼화사 지화장엄 첫 공개

동해시가 강원특별자치도 무형유산으로 지정된 ‘동해 삼화사 지화장엄’의 첫 공식 공개행사를 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 무릉별유천지 쇄석장 2층에서 7월 18일부터 26일까지 9일간 열리며, 지역의 소중한 전통문화를 시민과 관광객에게 처음으로 선보이는 뜻깊은 자리입니다.

Donghae City will host the first official public exhibition of the Donghae Samhwasa Jihwa Ornamentation, a designated Intangible Cultural Heritage of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. Held from July 18 to July 26 at the former quarry building in Mureung Byeolyucheonji, the exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience one of Korea's treasured Buddhist artistic traditions.

한 장의 한지가 피워낸 불교 예술

A Buddhist Art Form Blossoming from Handmade Paper

지화장엄은 천연염료로 곱게 물들인 한지를 이용해 종이꽃을 만들고, 이를 부처님께 공양하거나 법당을 장엄하는 전통 불교 의례 예술입니다. 특히 조선 초기 국행수륙재를 봉행했던 삼화사에서 오랜 세월 전승되어 온 귀중한 문화유산으로, 지난해 강원특별자치도 무형유산으로 지정되었습니다.

Jihwa Ornamentation is the traditional Buddhist art of creating delicate paper flowers from naturally dyed Korean hanji paper. These flowers are offered to the Buddha and used to adorn sacred ceremonial spaces. Preserved for centuries at Samhwasa Temple—once renowned for hosting national Buddhist rituals during the Joseon Dynasty—it was officially recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Gangwon Province last year.

이번 공개행사는 지난해 서울 인사동 특별전에 이어 처음으로 지역에서 열리는 공식 공개행사입니다. 무형유산 보존 규정에 따라 원형을 시민들에게 직접 소개하는 첫 자리라는 점에서 더욱 특별한 의미를 갖습니다.

Following its commemorative exhibition in Seoul's Insadong last year, this marks the very first official public presentation in Donghae. As the inaugural heritage disclosure under Korea's preservation regulations, it represents an important milestone in sharing this cultural legacy with the community.

전시장에서는 (사)삼화사지화장엄보존회 회원들이 직접 지화의 역사와 제작 과정, 천연염색 기법 등을 설명하는 해설 프로그램도 함께 운영됩니다. 작품을 감상하는 것을 넘어 전통 공예의 깊이와 아름다움을 더욱 가까이에서 느낄 수 있습니다.

Visitors will also enjoy guided interpretation sessions led by members of the Samhwasa Jihwa Preservation Association. They will explain the history of Jihwa, traditional crafting techniques, and natural dyeing methods, allowing guests to appreciate not only the finished artworks but also the craftsmanship and spiritual meaning behind them.
