동해시가 운영하는 「Work in 동해!」 워케이션 프로그램이 예상보다 빠른 인기를 얻으며 올해 참가자 모집을 6월에 조기 마감했다. 체류형 관광에 대한 관심이 높아지는 가운데, 동해는 이제 단순히 스쳐 가는 여행지가 아닌 ‘머무는 도시’로 새로운 가능성을 보여주고 있다.

Donghae City's “Work in Donghae!” workation program has reached full capacity by June, earlier than expected. As interest in stay-oriented tourism grows, Donghae is emerging not merely as a destination to visit, but as a place where people choose to stay, work, and experience life at a different pace.

2023년 처음 시작된 워케이션 사업은 바다와 자연, 그리고 업무가 조화를 이루는 새로운 라이프스타일을 제안해 왔다. 올해는 연말까지 운영 예정이던 모집 인원이 상반기 안에 모두 채워지며 그 인기를 입증했다. 지난해 119명이 연말까지 참여했던 것과 비교하면 더욱 의미 있는 성과다.

Launched in 2023, the workation program has introduced a lifestyle where work, nature, and the sea coexist in harmony. This year, all available spots were filled within the first half of the year, despite the program originally being scheduled through December. Compared to the 119 participants who joined throughout all of last year, the achievement is particularly remarkable.

워케이션은 단순한 휴가가 아니다. 노트북 하나를 들고 새로운 도시로 떠나 업무를 이어가면서도, 일과 삶의 균형을 다시 찾는 특별한 경험이다. 동해를 찾은 참가자들은 푸른 바다와 산책길, 카페와 문화공간 속에서 업무와 휴식을 자연스럽게 연결하고 있다.

특히 올해는 강원특별자치도청을 비롯한 공공기관, 기업, 연구기관, 학교, 상공회의소, 프리랜서 등 다양한 분야의 사람들이 참여하며 워케이션의 저변이 더욱 넓어졌다. 이는 동해가 특정 계층만의 여행지가 아닌 모두에게 열린 체류형 도시로 성장하고 있음을 보여준다.

This year, participants have come from a wide range of sectors, including government agencies, corporations, research institutes, educational institutions, chambers of commerce, and freelance professions. Their participation reflects Donghae’s growing appeal as an inclusive destination where diverse people can live, work, and recharge.

동해시는 단순한 숙박 지원에 머물지 않았다. 서핑과 향수 만들기, 명상과 감정오일 체험에 더해 도자기와 레진아트 프로그램을 새롭게 선보이며 지역만의 감성을 담은 문화 경험을 제공했다. 일상의 긴장을 내려놓고 자신만의 시간을 발견할 수 있도록 세심하게 준비한 것이다.

Donghae has gone beyond providing accommodations. In addition to surfing, perfume-making, meditation, and emotional oil workshops, new pottery and resin art experiences have been introduced, offering participants unique cultural encounters inspired by the region. Each program is thoughtfully designed to help visitors slow down and reconnect with themselves.
