강원특별자치도, 국토부 「AI특화 시범도시」 유치 성공!

강원특별자치도가 국토교통부가 추진한 「AI특화 시범도시 공모사업」에서 원주시가 최종 선정되는 성과를 거두며 대한민국 미래도시 경쟁의 중심에 섰다.

Gangwon State has achieved a major milestone as Wonju City was selected as the final winner of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s “AI Specialized Pilot City Project,” positioning the region at the forefront of Korea’s future smart city development.

AI특화 시범도시는 도시 전역에서 생성되는 데이터를 인공지능이 실시간으로 분석·학습할 수 있는 기반을 구축하고, 민간기업의 AI 기술 개발과 실증을 지원하는 국가 전략사업이다. 이를 통해 도시 운영의 효율성과 시민 삶의 질을 동시에 향상시키는 미래형 K-AI 시티 모델을 구현한다.

The AI Specialized Pilot City initiative is a national strategic project designed to build urban infrastructures where artificial intelligence can analyze and learn from citywide data in real time. The project supports private-sector AI development and testing while creating a next-generation K-AI City model that enhances both urban efficiency and quality of life.

이번 사업에서 원주시는 교통·도시솔루션 전문기업 에스트래픽을 대표기관으로 현대자동차, 솔트룩스, NHN클라우드, 서울로보틱스 등 총 7개 민간기업 및 연구기관이 참여하는 컨소시엄을 구성했다. 이들은 「도시가 스스로 이해하고 움직이는 원주 AI혁신도시」라는 비전을 제시해 높은 평가를 받았다.

For this project, Wonju formed a consortium led by transportation and smart-city solutions company ESTRAFFIC, together with seven leading private companies and research institutions, including Hyundai Motor Company, Saltlux, NHN Cloud, and Seoul Robotics. Their proposal, titled “Wonju AI Innovation City: A City That Understands and Operates Itself,” received outstanding evaluations.

원주시는 혁신도시 일원 3.6㎢를 우선 대상지로 지정하고, 오는 2030년까지 총사업비 1,981억 원 규모의 AI혁신도시 조성 사업을 추진한다. 사업비는 국비 1,434억 원, 지방비 489억 원, 민간투자 58억 원으로 구성된다.

Wonju will designate a 3.6-square-kilometer area within the Innovation City district as the primary development zone and invest a total of KRW 198.1 billion by 2030. The funding includes KRW 143.4 billion from the national government, KRW 48.9 billion from local governments, and KRW 5.8 billion from private investment.

사업의 핵심은 도시지능센터와 AI빌리지 구축이다. 이를 통해 도시 데이터를 통합 관리하고, 민간기업이 다양한 AI 기술과 서비스를 자유롭게 개발하고 실증할 수 있는 혁신 생태계를 조성할 계획이다.

At the heart of the project are the Urban Intelligence Center and AI Village. These facilities will integrate urban data management while creating an innovation ecosystem where private companies can freely develop, test, and commercialize advanced AI technologies and services.

원주 AI혁신도시에서는 자율주행 기반 통합 모빌리티 서비스, 입체형 재난안전 대응 시스템, AI 기반 건강관리 서비스 등 시민 체감형 미래 서비스가 실증된다. 특히 주거·교통·의료 분야를 중심으로 AI 기술이 실제 생활 속에 적용될 예정이다.

The Wonju AI Innovation City will serve as a real-world testing ground for citizen-focused services, including autonomous mobility systems, advanced disaster-response platforms, and AI-powered healthcare services. AI technologies will be integrated directly into everyday life, particularly in housing, transportation, and medical care.

강원특별자치도는 공모 과정에서 도내 지자체 간 공정한 경쟁을 위해 행정적 지원에 집중했으며, 앞으로는 원주시와 협력해 국비 확보와 중앙부처 협력, 규제 개선 및 전문 컨설팅 지원에 적극 나설 계획이다.

Throughout the competition process, Gangwon State focused on providing administrative support while ensuring fair competition among local governments. Moving forward, the province plans to work closely with Wonju to secure national funding, strengthen cooperation with central government agencies, improve regulations, and provide expert consulting support.

도 관계자는 “AI특화 시범도시 선정은 강원특별자치도의 디지털 혁신 역량과 미래도시 비전이 국가적으로 인정받은 의미 있는 성과”라며 “원주시가 대한민국을 대표하는 AI 선도도시로 성장할 수 있도록 적극 지원하겠다”고 밝혔다.

A provincial official stated, “The selection of Wonju as an AI Specialized Pilot City is a meaningful achievement that recognizes Gangwon State’s digital innovation capabilities and future-city vision. We will fully support Wonju in becoming one of Korea’s leading AI-driven cities.”
