경기 열기, 관광과 상권으로 이어지다

제61회 강원특별자치도민체육대회가 폐막을 앞두고 있는 가운데, 개최지 동해시가 스포츠와 관광, 지역경제가 선순환하는 새로운 도시 모델을 선보이며 주목받고 있다.

지난 12일 개막한 이번 도민체전은 육상, 축구, 테니스, 하키 등 43개 종목에서 열띤 경쟁이 펼쳐졌으며, 경기장마다 선수단과 시민들의 뜨거운 응원이 더해져 축제의 열기를 더욱 높였다.

특히 이번 대회는 단순한 스포츠 행사를 넘어 체류형 관광과 지역 상권 활성화로 이어지며 동해시가 지향하는 ‘체류형 스포츠도시’의 가능성을 확인하는 계기가 되고 있다.

경기를 마친 선수단과 가족, 방문객들은 무릉별유천지 라벤더축제장을 비롯해 도째비골 스카이밸리, 추암해변, 망상해변, 묵호항 등을 방문하며 동해의 아름다운 자연경관과 관광 콘텐츠를 함께 즐기고 있다.

이와 함께 숙박업소와 음식점, 전통시장 등 지역 상권에도 방문객들의 발길이 이어지며 지역경제 전반에 활력을 불어넣고 있다는 평가가 나온다.

동해시는 대회 준비 단계부터 경기장 시설 정비는 물론 숙박, 교통, 안전, 위생관리, 자원봉사 운영, 관광 홍보 등 분야별 지원체계를 구축해 참가자들의 만족도를 높이는 데 힘써왔다.

대회 마지막 날인 16일에는 대부분 종목의 경기가 마무리되고, 오후 4시 동해종합경기장에서 폐막식이 개최되어 나흘간 이어진 스포츠 축제의 대미를 장식할 예정이다.

이번 도민체전은 선수들이 경기를 치르고 떠나는 일회성 행사가 아닌, 관광과 문화, 지역 상권을 함께 경험하는 체류형 스포츠 축제로 운영되며 스포츠와 관광이 공존하는 동해시의 도시 경쟁력을 입증했다는 평가를 받고 있다.

심규언 동해시장은 “선수단과 방문객 여러분의 열정과 성원에 깊이 감사드린다”며 “폐막 순간까지 안전하고 품격 있는 대회 운영을 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

이어 “이번 도민체전을 통해 동해시가 보유한 우수한 관광·체류 인프라의 경쟁력을 다시 한번 확인했다”며 “앞으로도 스포츠와 관광이 함께 성장하는 지속가능한 도시 기반을 더욱 확대해 나가겠다”고 말했다.

As the 61st Gangwon State Sports Festival approaches its closing day, the host city of Donghae is drawing attention for showcasing a successful model where sports, tourism, and the local economy grow together.

Since the opening ceremony on June 12, athletes have competed passionately in 43 sporting events, including athletics, football, tennis, and hockey. Enthusiastic support from residents and visitors has transformed competition venues into vibrant festival grounds.

More importantly, the event has gone beyond sports competition, becoming a catalyst for tourism and economic activity. It has highlighted Donghae’s growing potential as a destination for sports-centered staycation tourism.

After completing their competitions, athletes, families, and visitors have been exploring Donghae’s major attractions, including the Lavender Festival at Mureung Byeolyucheonji, Dottaebi Gol Sky Valley, Chuam Beach, Mangsang Beach, and Mukho Port, enjoying both the city’s natural beauty and tourism resources.

The influx of visitors has also benefited local hotels, restaurants, traditional markets, and small businesses, providing a noticeable boost to the regional economy.

To ensure a successful event, Donghae City invested heavily in venue improvements, transportation services, accommodation support, safety management, sanitation measures, volunteer programs, and tourism promotion efforts.

On June 16, the remaining competitions will conclude, followed by the closing ceremony at Donghae Sports Complex at 4:00 PM, bringing four days of sporting excellence and community celebration to an end.

The festival has proven that sporting events can serve as more than competitions; they can become opportunities for visitors to experience local culture, tourism, and commerce. This year's event has successfully demonstrated Donghae’s competitiveness as a city where sports and tourism coexist and thrive.

Mayor Sim Gyu-eon expressed his appreciation, saying, “We sincerely thank all athletes, officials, and visitors for their enthusiasm and support. We will continue to do our utmost to ensure a safe and dignified conclusion to the festival.”

He added, “This event reaffirmed the strength of Donghae’s tourism and hospitality infrastructure. We will continue expanding the foundation for a city where sports and tourism grow together for years to come.”
