동해시가 제61회 강원도민체육대회를 앞두고 도시 이미지 개선과 쾌적한 보행환경 조성을 위해 주요 도심 옹벽에 도시경관 개선사업을 추진하며 손님맞이 준비에 박차를 가하고 있다.

Donghae City is accelerating preparations to welcome visitors ahead of the 61st Gangwon Provincial Sports Festival by carrying out urban landscape improvement projects on major retaining walls throughout the city, enhancing both the city’s image and pedestrian environment.

시는 총사업비 5억2천만원을 투입해 동해세관 동측 옹벽, 이안센트럴아파트 앞 옹벽, 망상나들목 입구 옹벽 등에 대한 경관 개선사업을 완료했으며, 하반기에는 천곡동굴과 발한도서관 맞은편 등 5개소를 추가 정비할 계획이다.

 The city has invested approximately 520 million KRW to complete landscape improvement projects at the eastern retaining wall of Donghae Customs, the wall in front of Ian Central Apartments, and the entrance wall of Mangsang Interchange. Five additional sites, including areas near Cheongok Cave and across from Balhan Library, are scheduled for improvement later this year.

먼저 동해세관 동측 해안로 구간(L=94.4m)은 하평해변과 철길을 주제로 한 벽화와 장식 부조를 설치해 해안도시의 특색을 담아냈다. 특히 입체적인 기차 형상 디자인을 적용해 관광객들의 발길을 멈추게 하는 포토존으로 조성하였다.

Along the 94.4-meter coastal road section east of Donghae Customs, murals and decorative relief artworks inspired by Happyeong Beach and the railway were installed, reflecting the city's coastal identity. A three-dimensional train-themed design has also been added, creating an attractive photo spot for visitors.

이안센트럴아파트 앞 옹벽(L=80.5m)은 ‘행복이 머무는 시간’을 주제로 인생의 아름다운 여정을 표현했다. 여기에 야간 경관조명을 함께 설치해 어둡고 삭막했던 보행 공간을 밝고 안전한 거리로 재탄생시켰다.

The 80.5-meter retaining wall in front of Ian Central Apartments was redesigned under the theme “Moments Where Happiness Stays,” depicting the beautiful journey of life. Nightscape lighting was installed to transform the previously dark and dull walkway into a brighter and safer public space.

 망상나들목 입구 옹벽은 지역 예술가인 망상 출신 유현병 작가가 참여해 매화를 주제로 한 시화(詩畫) 형식의 갤러리형 벽화로 새롭게 단장됐다.

At the entrance of Mangsang Interchange, local artist Yoo Hyun-byeong, a native of Mangsang, created a gallery-style mural featuring plum blossoms and poetic artwork, bringing local culture and artistic expression into the public space.

 특히 이번 사업은 오는 6월 개최되는 강원도민체육대회에 참가하는 선수단과 방문객들에게 깨끗하고 품격 있는 도시 이미지를 제공하기 위한 손님맞이 사업의 일환으로 추진됐다.

 The project was implemented as part of the city's efforts to welcome athletes and visitors attending the Gangwon Provincial Sports Festival in June, offering a cleaner and more refined urban image.

 시는 이번 사업을 통해 노후 경관 개선과 도시미관 향상은 물론 관광객들에게 새로운 볼거리와 휴식 공간을 제공하고, 야간 보행 안전성 확보에도 도움이 될 것으로 기대하고 있다.

Through these improvements, the city expects not only to revitalize aging urban spaces and enhance visual appeal but also to provide new attractions and resting areas for tourists while improving pedestrian safety at night.

한편 동해시는 노후·오염된 경관시설물에 대한 청소와 재도색 등 지속적인 유지관리도 병행하며 시민과 관광객 모두가 만족할 수 있는 쾌적한 도시환경 조성에 힘쓰고 있다.

 In addition, Donghae City continues to maintain public landscape facilities through cleaning, repainting, and ongoing upkeep efforts to ensure a pleasant urban environment for both residents and visitors.

#김봉학 도시과장은 “도시경관은 도시의 경쟁력이자 첫인상을 결정하는 중요한 요소”라며 “앞으로도 지역의 특색과 이야기를 담은 경관 개선사업을 지속적으로 추진해 시민들이 자부심을 느끼고 방문객들이 다시 찾고 싶은 도시를 만들어 나가겠다”고 말했다.
