“A City Walking Along the River and Resting in Purple Lavender”

Donghae’s Early Summer Begins with Festivals

Donghae is entering its most beautiful season of the year.

Along the riverside in the heart of the city, laughter drifts with the flowing water.

Beneath the towering cliffs of an abandoned limestone mine, the scent of lavender quietly spreads through the air.

Some visitors stroll slowly along the stream of Jeoncheon.

Others pause for long moments inside fields painted in shades of purple.

This June, Donghae presents two very different festivals that together tell one story about the city itself —

a festival of everyday life by the urban river, and a cultural rebirth rising from industrial heritage.

From June 5 to 7, the “13th Jeoncheon Festival” will transform the Jeoncheon riverside into a lively cultural playground for citizens and visitors alike.

From Bukpyeong Bridge to Jeoncheon Bridge, the riverside will be filled with flea markets, food trucks, photo zones, live performances, and hands-on programs.

As night falls, fireworks will light up the early summer sky above the water.

Programs such as the pedal kayak race, upcycling boat competition, children’s drawing contest, and wish capsule event will allow visitors to actively participate rather than simply watch.

Music flowing along the river and the smiles of families gathering together will bring warmth and life back into the city’s everyday landscape.

At the same time, Mureung Byeollyucheonji will host the “2026 Lavender Pre-Festival” ahead of its main lavender festival opening on June 13.

Once a massive limestone mining site that symbolized Korea’s industrial era, the area has now been transformed into one of Donghae’s most emotional and visually striking tourist destinations.

Lavender gardens blooming beneath dramatic quarry cliffs create a rare landscape where industrial history and natural beauty coexist.

The traces of the old mine have not disappeared.

Instead, they have been reborn as a place of healing, memory, and cultural imagination.

Visitors walking along the lavender trails will encounter lakes, cliffs, flowers, and quiet moments that define the atmosphere of Donghae in early summer.

What Donghae is presenting through these festivals is more than entertainment.

It is a new urban story — one that connects rivers, industrial heritage, local life, and emotional tourism into a single experience.

At Jeoncheon, everyday life becomes a festival.

At Mureung Byeollyucheonji, industrial history transforms into art and tourism.

A city where rivers, flowers, people, and time flow together.

This is Donghae in the summer of 2026.
