the vast limestone quarry that once powered Korea’s industrial growth no longer stands merely as a relic of a halted industry.

50여 년 동안 시멘트 원료를 공급하며 국가 경제성장의 기반이 되었던 공간.

채광이 멈춘 뒤에는 깊게 패인 절개지와 황량한 암반만 남아 사람들의 기억 속에서 점점 잊혀가는 장소가 되어갔다.

For over fifty years, this place supplied limestone for cement production and supported the nation’s rapid economic rise.

But when mining operations ceased, only steep cut cliffs and barren rock fields remained, slowly fading into forgotten memory.

그러나 동해시는 이 공간을 단순히 덮어버리지 않았다.

흔적을 지우는 대신, 시간의 상처 위에 새로운 풍경을 피워냈다.

Yet the city chose not to bury or erase the site.

Instead of hiding its scars, it allowed new landscapes to bloom upon them.

그렇게 탄생한 곳이 바로 ‘무릉별유천지’다.

산업의 기억과 자연, 문화와 치유가 공존하는 새로운 관광의 이름이다.

That rebirth became what is now known as “Mureung Byeolyucheonji.”

A destination where industrial memory, nature, culture, and healing coexist in harmony.

에메랄드빛 청옥호와 금곡호.

하늘을 감싸듯 우뚝 솟은 석회석 절벽.

그리고 그 사이를 채우는 보랏빛 라벤더 물결.

Emerald-colored lakes, Cheongokho and Geumgokho.

Towering limestone cliffs embracing the sky.

And between them, endless waves of purple lavender fields.

무릉별유천지는 과거를 숨기지 않는다.

오히려 폐광의 지형과 채굴의 흔적을 새로운 경관 자산으로 바꾸며 ‘창조적 복원’이라는 특별한 해답을 보여준다.

특히 최근에는 라벤더 정원이 조성되며 공간의 분위기는 더욱 깊어졌다.

과거 석회석 분진이 흩날리던 자리에는 이제 향기로운 바람과 음악, 사람들의 웃음소리가 머문다.

동해시는 2023년부터 라벤더 축제를 열며 폐광지 재생의 의미를 시민과 관광객이 함께 체감할 수 있도록 하고 있다.

축제는 단순한 꽃 행사가 아니다.

산업유산과 도시재생, 관광과 치유가 함께 어우러지는 새로운 지역 서사의 시작이다.

Since 2023, the city has hosted the Lavender Festival, allowing visitors and residents alike to experience the meaning of abandoned mine restoration firsthand.

The festival is more than a seasonal flower event.

It marks the beginning of a new regional narrative where industrial heritage, urban regeneration, tourism, and healing come together.

석회석 채광장이었던 32만 평의 공간은 이제 사람들의 쉼터가 되었고,

버려진 산업의 흔적은 대한민국을 대표하는 관광자원으로 다시 살아나고 있다.

The 320,000-pyeong quarry site has now become a place of rest for countless visitors,

while the remnants of a once-abandoned industry are being reborn as one of Korea’s most symbolic tourism landmarks.

무릉별유천지의 변화는 단순한 개발이 아니다.
