최근 동해시 어달삼거리는 SNS를 통해 빠르게 확산되며 새로운 여행 명소로 떠올랐다. 묵호·발한·어달을 잇는 이 해안권은 이제 ‘풍경을 담는 공간’이자 동시에 ‘안전을 고민해야 하는 공간’이 되었다.

Recently, Eodal Intersection has rapidly gained attention on social media, emerging as a new travel hotspot. Connecting Mukho, Balhan, and Eodal, this coastal area has become not only a place to capture scenery, but also one that demands a deeper reflection on safety.

More Visitors, Faster Approaching Risks

관광객 증가 속도는 눈에 띄게 가파르다.

묵호역 KTX 이용객은 지난해 12월 약 2만 명에서 올해 1월 약 5만 명으로 급증했다. 사람들의 발걸음이 늘어난 만큼, 도로 위를 자유롭게 넘나드는 관광객들의 모습도 자연스럽게 늘어났다.

The surge in visitors has been striking.

At Mukho Station, KTX passenger numbers jumped from around 20,000 in December last year to approximately 50,000 in January this year. As footsteps increased, so did the number of tourists moving freely across active roadways.

차량이 오가는 도로 위에서 사진을 찍는 풍경은 이제 낯설지 않다.

그러나 그 순간, 보행자와 차량이 교차하는 위험한 장면이 반복되고 있다. 아름다운 풍경 뒤편에는 ‘사고의 가능성’이라는 또 다른 그림자가 함께 드리워지고 있다.

Yet in those moments, a dangerous overlap between pedestrians and vehicles continues to occur. Behind the beautiful scenery lies another shadow—the growing risk of accidents.

현장에서 시작되는 작은 변화

Small Changes Beginning on the Ground

이에 동해시는 5월 31일까지 주말마다 오전 10시부터 오후 6시까지 현장 안전관리 인력을 배치한다.

이들은 차량과 보행자의 동선을 분리하고, 관광객들에게 안전한 이동을 안내하는 역할을 맡는다.

In response, Donghae City will deploy on-site safety personnel every weekend until May 31, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Their role is to separate vehicle and pedestrian flows and guide visitors toward safer movement.

속도를 낮추고, 안전을 높이다

Lowering Speed, Raising Safety

어달삼거리 내리막 구간의 제한속도는 기존 시속 40km에서 30km로 하향하는 방안이 관계기관에 건의되었다.

절차가 완료되면 표지판과 노면 표시도 새롭게 정비될 예정이다.

The city has proposed lowering the speed limit on the downhill section of the intersection from 40 km/h to 30 km/h.

Once approved, traffic signs and road markings will also be updated accordingly.

풍경을 지키는 또 하나의 방법

이와 함께 교통안전표지 보완, 노면표시 재정비, 방호울타리 설치 검토 등 전반적인 안전시설 개선도 추진된다.

이는 단순한 규제가 아니라, 이곳의 풍경을 더 오래 지키기 위한 최소한의 장치다.

Additionally, the city plans to enhance overall safety infrastructure, including improved traffic signs, refreshed road markings, and the possible installation of guardrails.

These measures are not merely restrictions—they are essential steps to preserve the beauty of this place for the long term.

동해시 관계자는 “어달삼거리는 많은 관광객이 찾는 명소가 된 만큼, 시민과 방문객 모두의 안전이 최우선 과제”라며 “지속적인 점검과 개선을 통해 안전한 관광환경을 만들어 가겠다”고 밝혔다.

A city official emphasized, “As Eodal Intersection has become a major attraction, the safety of both residents and visitors must come first. We will continue inspections and improvements to create a safer tourism environment.”
