A moment when everyday local resources transformed into sweet possibilities.
On the 3rd, the RISE Project Team of Gangwon State University successfully held the final performance-sharing event for its community-based lifelong education program, Chocolate Foundation Course, operated as part of the RISE initiative.
Around 50 participants—including university staff, local government officials, industry representatives, and residents—gathered to celebrate the outcomes.
The strong presence of local small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs highlighted the program’s value as a practice-oriented lifelong education model closely linked to regional industries.

Participants showcased chocolate products they had personally developed, accompanied by storytelling presentations, explanations of product features, recipes, production processes, and on-site expert consultations—turning learning outcomes into tangible results.
Learners from the northern Yeongdong region—Yangyang, Sokcho, and Goseong—presented a total of 14 chocolate products and business ideas inspired by local specialties and tourism resources, demonstrating the program’s potential to extend beyond education into real entrepreneurial opportunities.
The exhibited products were curated around three key themes:
use of local herbs,
integration of regional agricultural products, and
chocolates inspired by local imagery and storytelling—clearly highlighting the uniqueness of the program.
From bonbon chocolates infused with Yangyang herbs to creations featuring brown rice, buckwheat, apples, and pine mushrooms, as well as chocolates inspired by the sea of Sokcho and the landscapes of Yangyang, the display drew strong interest from industry professionals.
Kim Hee-yeon, CEO of a Yangyang herb farm, shared her thoughts:
“This course allowed me to learn professional chocolate product development and experiential program planning. It was especially meaningful because so much of it can be applied directly in the field, and it truly helped strengthen both creativity and entrepreneurial capabilities.”
Director Choi Geun-pyo of the RISE Project Team noted,
“This event confirmed how learners’ ideas can merge with local resources to become real products. Moving forward, we will continue to strengthen practice-oriented lifelong education aligned with regional industry needs, and foster local talent through close cooperation between universities, local governments, and industries.”
