Preparing a Better Tomorrow through the 2025 Gangwon–Pyeongchang Rural Study Program with the Superintendent
“A Platform for Communication with the Gangwon–Pyeongchang Rural Study Council and Participating School Principals”
The Pyeongchang Office of Education, led by Superintendent Kim Geum-sook, held the
“Dialogue and Consultation Meeting with the Superintendent, the Gangwon–Pyeongchang Rural Study Council, and Participating School Principals for the 2025 Program” on December 17 at the main conference hall of the Pyeongchang Office of Education.
The meeting brought together members of the Gangwon–Pyeongchang Rural Study Council, launched in July, and principals of participating rural study schools to engage in direct dialogue with the superintendent. The session focused on gathering on-site feedback, reviewing support systems for students adapting to rural life, and discussing future directions for a more sustainable and effective rural study program in Pyeongchang.
Currently, six schools in the Pyeongchang area participate in the Gangwon Rural Study Program (including newly designated schools for the first semester of the 2026 academic year): four elementary schools—Gyechon, Bangrim, Jujin, and Soksa—and two middle schools—Gyechon and Mitan. A total of eight students from five families have transferred to these schools, and inquiries from students in other regions interested in enrolling for the first semester of 2026 have been steadily increasing.
These achievements are attributed to a combination of factors, including diverse support programs provided by the Pyeongchang Office of Education, specialized curricula and active promotion by participating schools, and close collaboration with the local community. Unique educational experiences—such as ecological environment programs and cultural and arts activities—are seen as key strengths that distinguish rural study programs from urban education settings.
Superintendent Kim Geum-sook stated, “Through this consultation, we aim to strengthen mutual cooperation between the Rural Study Council and participating schools while developing practical support measures for school sites. By working closely with the local community, we hope to revitalize rural study programs, enhance the sustainability of local education, and bring new vitality to Pyeongchang as a region facing population decline.”
