글로벌 팝아트 스타, 캐서린 번하드! 뉴욕을 넘어 강릉에서 첫 대규모 전시 개막

강릉시립미술관 솔올은 미국 현대미술 작가 캐서린 번하드 특별전시 《인사이드 더 스튜디오》를 오는 10월 22일(수)부터 2026년 1월 18일(일)까지 개최한다.

캐서린 번하드(1975~, 미국)는 2000년대 초 뉴욕 미술계에 혜성처럼 등장해 ‘현대미술과 대중문화의 완벽한 교차점’이라는 평가를 받아왔으며, 일상에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 사물, 음식, 만화 캐릭터 등을 대담하고 유머러스하게 표현한다.

강릉시립미술관 솔올 전시에서는 작가의 작품 중 6m에 달하는 초대형 신작 여러 점이 한국 최초로 공개되며 총 140여 점의 대규모 작품이 전시된다. 이번 전시는 작가의 소속사인 세계적인 갤러리 중 하나인 데이비드 즈워너(David Zwirner)와의 협력으로 성사되었다.

특히 솔올 전시실에는 작가의 미국 작업실이 날것 그대로의 형태로 구현되며, 작가의 작품에 중요한 영감을 주는 작가의 샤워실 역시, 타일 바닥까지 전시실에 그대로 재현된다. 작가에게 있어 샤워실은 작품에 영감을 주는 중요한 장소이다. 작가는 일상 속 사물들이 샤워를 한다고 상상한다. ‘내 욕실에서 핑크팬더가 거품 목욕을 한다면?’과 같은 작가 특유의 유머를 가미한 상상에서 출발한다.

전시는 총 5개의 섹션으로 이루어져 있다. ‘섹션1_슈퍼모델과 캐서린 번하드의 시작, 섹션2_정글, 새로운 패턴 회화의 탄생, 섹션3_피자, 나이키, 토일렛 페이퍼, 섹션4_현대미술이 된 대중문화의 아이콘들, 섹션5_캐서린 번하드의 세계: 예술이 자라는 곳’ 작가가 미술학교를 졸업하고 몰두하던 초창기 슈퍼모델 작품부터, 일상 속 사물, 핑크팬더 시리즈까지, 작가의 생애 전반에 걸친 작품세계를 조명한다.

Special Exhibition Inside the Studio Opens at Gangneung City Museum of Art “Solol”

Gangneung City Museum of Art Solol will host a special exhibition, Inside the Studio, featuring American contemporary artist Katherine Bernhardt from October 22, 2025 (Wed) to January 18, 2026 (Sun).

Katherine Bernhardt (b. 1975, USA) burst onto the New York art scene in the early 2000s and has been praised as “the perfect intersection of contemporary art and pop culture.” Her works boldly and humorously depict everyday objects, foods, and cartoon characters familiar to the public.

The Solol exhibition will feature over 140 works, including several new large-scale pieces up to six meters in size, shown in Korea for the first time. This exhibition has been made possible through collaboration with David Zwirner, one of the world’s leading galleries representing Bernhardt.

A highlight of the exhibition is the recreation of the artist’s actual New York studio within the museum, including her shower room, meticulously replicated down to the tiled floor. For Bernhardt, the shower is a space of inspiration—she often imagines everyday objects taking showers themselves. Her whimsical imagination begins with thoughts like, “What if Pink Panther took a bubble bath in my bathroom?”—a humorous reflection of her playful artistic process.

The exhibition is divided into five sections:

Jungle: The Birth of a New Pattern Painting
Pizza, Nike, Toilet Paper
Icons of Pop Culture Turned Contemporary Art
The World of Katherine Bernhardt: Where Art Grows

From her early works focused on supermodels during her art school days to everyday objects and her famous Pink Panther series, the exhibition offers a comprehensive look at Bernhardt’s artistic journey.

Shin Kyuman, Director of Gangneung City Museum of Art, stated,

“We hope visitors will experience a special moment discovering pure joy and vibrant energy in everyday life through the hippest contemporary art.”

The exhibition runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and is closed on Mondays.
Admission is ticketed, with discounted pre-sale tickets available on the Gangneung City Museum of Art website until October 21 (Tue).
Docent tours are offered Tuesday to Friday at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., and Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
Group visits of 20 or more require advance reservation.
