- Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Holds First Meeting on Supporting International Students

Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) held the first meeting of the “Council for Attracting and Supporting International Students” on Friday, September 5, at 2:00 p.m. in the provincial government building.
The council was established under a new ordinance passed this year. Its purpose is to provide stable learning and living conditions for international students in Gangwon and to build a system that helps them settle in the region.
The council includes 25 members, such as officials from provincial departments, 13 universities (including Catholic Kwandong University and Gangneung-Wonju National University), immigration offices, and related organizations like the Gangwon Research Institute, Gangwon Technopark, and Gangwon Rise Center.
During the meeting, participants discussed ways to support students’ academic and daily lives, improve living conditions for long-term settlement, and respond to demographic changes by utilizing global talent.
The council will meet regularly and serve as a cooperative governance body, supporting international students throughout their journey from arrival to settlement.
Lee Hee-yeol, Director-General of Policy Coordination at Gangwon Province, said, “International students are not only vital for strengthening the competitiveness of local universities, but also an important asset for addressing population decline and expanding global networks. We will work closely with universities and institutions to help international students adapt well to both their studies and daily lives.”
