Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Strengthens Response to North Korean Balloon Debris – Joint Wildfire Suppression Drill Conducted

Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) conducted a joint wildfire suppression drill on Wednesday, December 18, in the Oji-ri area of Dongsong-eup, Cheorwon County. The drill was aimed at strengthening nighttime wildfire response capabilities caused by North Korean balloon debris.

The exercise involved over 100 participants, including the Korea Forest Service, Cheorwon County, military units, firefighters, and police. It simulated a scenario where North Korean balloon debris caused a nighttime wildfire in the border area of Cheorwon. Military units promptly collected the debris, and ground and aerial suppression resources were deployed to extinguish the wildfire in a realistic reenactment.

The drill utilized 13 pieces of equipment, including two wildfire suppression helicopters, wildfire response vehicles, fire engines, military vehicles, and thermal imaging drones. Teams deployed included one specialized wildfire disaster response unit, one professional wildfire prevention and suppression team, two military teams, and one firefighting team.

Hong Chang-soo, Director of the Wildfire Prevention Center, emphasized, "Border areas like Cheorwon are at high risk of wildfires caused by North Korean balloon debris. This drill has strengthened organic collaboration among related agencies and further enhanced wildfire response capabilities."

He also urged the public, stating, "Since balloon debris poses a significant risk of causing wildfires, we strongly request that any such debris found in forested areas be immediately reported to the nearest forestry department or by calling 119."

강원특별자치도(도지사 김진태)는 12월 18일(수), 철원군 동송읍 오지리 일원에서 북한 쓰레기 풍선으로 인한 야간 산불 대응 강화를 위해 유관기관 합동 산불진화 훈련을 실시했다.

이번 훈련은 산림청, 철원군, 군부대, 소방, 경찰 등 100여 명이 참여한 가운데, 북한 쓰레기 풍선이 철원군 접경지역에 떨어져 야간 산불이 발생한 상황을 가정하여 진행됐다. 군부대는 쓰레기 풍선을 신속히 수거했으며, 지상 및 공중 진화 자원을 투입해 산불을 진화하는 과정을 실전처럼 재현했다.

훈련에는 산불진화 헬기 2대, 산불진화차, 소방차, 군부대 차량, 열화상 드론 등 13대의 장비와 산불재난특수진화대 1개 팀, 산불전문예방진화대 1개 팀, 군부대 2개 팀, 소방 1개 팀 등이 투입됐다.

홍창수 산불방지센터소장은 “철원 등 접경지역은 북한 쓰레기 풍선으로 인한 산불 위험이 높은 지역으로, 이번 훈련을 통해 유관기관 간 유기적인 협력 체계를 강화하고 산불 대응 능력을 한층 더 향상시키는 계기가 되었다”고 말했다.

더불어, “쓰레기 풍선이 산불을 일으킬 수 있는 위험이 크므로, 산림내에서 쓰레기 풍선을 발견할 경우 가까운 산림부서나 119에 즉시 신고해 주시길 당부드린다”고 전했다.
