Korea-China Summit: President Yoon Expresses Hope for Strengthened Strategic Cooperative Partnership

President Yoon Suk Yeol, attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima, Peru, held a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on November 15 (local time). This marks the first bilateral meeting between the two leaders in two years since their last summit during the G20 meeting in Bali, Indonesia, in November 2022.

In his opening remarks, President Yoon emphasized,

"China is a key partner with whom we closely collaborate across security, economy, culture, and human exchanges. I look forward to further solidifying our strategic cooperative partnership based on mutual respect, reciprocity, and shared interests."

He also expressed a desire for closer collaboration in addressing regional challenges, stating,

"I hope that Korea and China can work together to promote stability and peace in the region, particularly in response to North Korea's repeated provocations, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and military cooperation between Russia and North Korea."

Excerpts from President Yoon's Opening Remarks

"I am delighted to meet with President Xi again today, following our cordial exchange at last year’s APEC summit. 

It has been two years since our summit in Bali, where we discussed advancing Korea-China relations based on shared beliefs in multilateralism and free trade. Since then, I am pleased with the active exchanges between our two countries, including the Korea-China-Japan summit last May.

China is an important partner with whom we cooperate closely across security, economy, culture, and human exchanges. I hope we can further enhance our strategic cooperative partnership based on mutual respect, reciprocity, and shared interests.

Amid rapid changes in the global security and economic order, Korea and China face numerous challenges. I look forward to continuing close communication and cooperation with China to address these challenges. In particular, I hope both countries can work together to promote stability and peace in the region, especially in responding to North Korea’s repeated provocations, the war in Ukraine, and military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.

Furthermore, I hope to strengthen cooperation in the economic sector, which has been the backbone of our bilateral relations for over 30 years, to improve the livelihoods of our people. Peace and prosperity in the region, including the Korean Peninsula, serve the common interests of both Korea and China. I anticipate in-depth discussions today on ways to collaborate toward these goals."
