Governor Kim Jin-tae Visits Boston to Launch Global Cooperation for Gangwon-style K-Bio Cluster Development

Governor Kim Jin-tae of Gangwon Province visited Boston, USA, on September 27 to discuss various cooperation measures aimed at supporting the overseas expansion of Gangwon-based bio companies and improving the region's healthcare system. Gangwon Province announced that this visit is expected to accelerate the realization of the roadmap for the Gangwon-style Bio Cluster.

CIC Visit: Discussing Global Market Entry for Gangwon Bio Companies

Governor Kim visited the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) in Cambridge, Boston, and held meetings with the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI) U.S. branch and resident companies. During these discussions, Governor Kim explored ways to assist Gangwon bio companies in entering the global market and considered strategies for organizing and operating a task force dedicated to developing the Gangwon Bio Specialized Complex.

Currently, CIC is home to the U.S. branch of KHIDI and more than 30 Korean bio companies, including YouBioLogics, one of Gangwon's leading bio companies, which entered the U.S. market in April of this year. Governor Kim remarked, “I’ve realized how the bio-industry ecosystem at CIC is leading the global market. We will spare no effort in helping Gangwon-based companies successfully enter the Boston bio cluster.”

KHIDI's U.S. branch director, Park Soon-man, emphasized that "Korean pharmaceutical and bio companies are achieving results in the overseas market using CIC as a hub," and expressed his hopes for more Gangwon companies to expand internationally.

Harvard and Massachusetts Medical School Visits: Discussing Global TalentDevelopment and Collaboration

Governor Kim also visited Harvard Medical School to discuss cooperation measures to strengthen medical technology development and the bio-health industry ecosystem. At Massachusetts Medical School, he participated in discussions about joint research and collaborative projects focused on enhancing AI-based healthcare delivery systems with Hallym University and Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital.

Worcester Mayor Joseph M. Petty also attended the meeting and expressed his hopes for a robust global cooperation framework between governments, universities, and hospitals. Governor Kim said, “This visit has brought Gangwon closer to building an advanced healthcare system utilizing AI technologies,” and expressed his hopes for innovation in medical services and the activation of global talent exchange.

Building Global Cooperation Networks: Growth Potential for Gangwon’s Bio Industry

Governor Kim assessed that this North American trip, which included meetings in Canada’s Alberta, CIC in Boston, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts Medical School, marks an important starting point for the global growth of Gangwon’s bio industry. 

He also pledged to support the establishment of global joint research institutes and various projects centered on local universities and hospitals, contributing to the development of regional healthcare. Gangwon Province plans to systematize support measures for the overseas expansion of bio companies and strengthen efforts to successfully complete the Gangwon-style bio cluster following this visit.
