On September 23 (local time), Governor Kim Jin-tae of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province met with Premier Danielle Smith of Alberta at the Calgary City Hall in Canada and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the sisterhood between Gangwon and Alberta. The agreement aims to review the achievements of the past 50 years and establish a cooperative relationship focused on three key areas: future industries, economic cooperation, and sports.

During his visit, Governor Kim hosted a Future Industry Cooperation Roundtable, where he shared Gangwon's “5+1 Vision for Future Industries.” Key participants included Gangwon Technopark and Alberta’s leading industrial support institutions, such as Alberta Innovates, Calgary Economic Development (CED), and Edmonton Global, who discussed the establishment of a cooperative framework for future industries.

Gangwon and Alberta established their sisterhood on September 3, 1974, and have since collaborated in various fields, including agriculture, sports, technology, and human exchange, adapting to the changing times. With common strategic industries such as bio-healthcare, hydrogen, food tech, artificial intelligence (AI), and tourism, they are ideal partners for mutual development through cooperation.

During the signing ceremony, Governor Kim stated, “Fifty years ago, Alberta donated a cow to Gangwon, and a few years later, an additional 30 were donated, leading to a herd of 10,000 over time. I hope Gangwon and Alberta will continue to focus on cooperation in future industries, economic collaboration, and sports.”

Premier Danielle Smith of Alberta remarked, “This monumental event is not just a celebration of our shared achievements but also a chance to strengthen our mutually beneficial relationship. Gangwon is a valuable friend and partner of our province, and this MOU will deepen our bond further.”

Before the signing ceremony, Governor Kim visited the Calgary Military Museum, where he laid a wreath at the Korean War Veterans Memorial and expressed gratitude and respect to three Korean War veterans in attendance: Ken Bilger, Bill Bethel, and George Couture.

The MOU signing marks a significant step forward, paving the way for Gangwon and Alberta to deepen their cooperation in future industries, economy, and sports as they look forward to the next 50 years of partnership.
