Kangwon Semiconductor Cluster's First Project "Korea Semiconductor Academy" Commences

❍ From July 15th (Monday), pilot education for 200 participants in 4 courses; formal education expected in the second half of 2026.

❍ Full-scale nurturing of core semiconductor talent accelerates the formation of the Kangwon Semiconductor Cluster.

❍ Successful bid for 150 billion KRW worth of semiconductor infrastructure through government proposals, boosting the Kangwon semiconductor industry.

On July 15th (Monday), Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, in collaboration with Wonju City, held the opening ceremony of the "Korea Semiconductor Academy," the first project of the Kangwon Semiconductor Cluster, at Sangji University’s Yeongseo Hall. This marks the official start of Gangwon-style semiconductor talent development, combining theoretical and practical semiconductor education.

The Gangwon-style semiconductor talent development began with the Semiconductor Shared University enrollment ceremony in February, involving seven universities in the province. Today, an interim education center was established at Sangji University to commence full-scale practical education.

The interim education center, set up to provide prompt practical semiconductor education ahead of the formal opening of the "Korea Semiconductor Academy" in 2026, is equipped with advanced equipment (over 20 units) and top-tier instructors. It offers four courses across eight subjects to 200 students. Notably, Samsung Electronics and DB HiTek, which have signed talent development agreements, have each donated an expensive semiconductor equipment, giving the initiative a strong start.

Today's event was attended by Jin-Tae Kim, Governor of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, Ki-Heon Song, National Assembly member, Yoon-Mi Park, Vice Chairperson of the Provincial Council, Kang-Soo Won, Mayor of Wonju City, as well as executives from Samsung Electronics (President Seung-Hee Park), DB HiTek (Vice President Seung-Joo Yang), Korea Semiconductor Industry Association Semiconductor Academy (Director Seung-Joo Hong), 80 students, and approximately 150 other participants.

Governor Jin-Tae Kim presented honorary citizenship certificates and appreciation plaques to executives from Samsung Electronics, DB HiTek, and the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, who have signed talent development agreements with the province. He also observed the training of the first cohort and experienced XR education.

Meanwhile, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province’s full-scale talent development effort aims to accelerate the establishment of the Kangwon Semiconductor Base Cluster. Earlier this year, the province secured national funding for the Medical AI Semiconductor Center (21.9 billion KRW) and successfully attracted the Semiconductor Reliability Verification Center (35.1 billion KRW) and the Consumables Demonstration Center (42.7 billion KRW) after competing with other local governments.

Samsung Electronics President Seung-Hee Park, who attended the event, remarked, “The semiconductor industry is at a critical juncture, and at such times, human competitiveness is crucial. We hope that the 'Korea Semiconductor Academy' will become a cradle of semiconductor talent education.” Governor Jin-Tae Kim stated, “While there are concerns about the lack of water and electricity, the most important factor is people. People cannot be procured suddenly, which is why we established the nation’s first public semiconductor education institution, the 'Korea Semiconductor Academy'.

Additionally, with three national projects confirmed for the tester bed, a total of 150 billion KRW will be concentrated here. Ultimately, the Semiconductor Joint Research Institute must be attracted as well.”

He further emphasized, “It is unprecedented for company executives, such as those from Samsung Electronics and DB HiTek, to attend a local government event and provide support with equipment and teaching resources.

The semiconductor industry in Gangwon will continue to thrive, contributing significantly to the semiconductor ecosystem.”
